Have you ever found yourself spending hours on Google doing “research” on how to run a successful business, or launch a product, or start a charity campaign, or do whatever it is you want to do — instead of getting out there and just DOING the damn thing?
Or maybe you’ve been keeping yourself really busy with activities that feel “productive” but really are NOT. For example, you’re obsessed with creating the perfect logo for your company, but you haven’t even decided what you’re going to sell, and you haven’t worked with a single client yet.
If this sounds like you, I promise: You are not alone.
This is what I call fear of launching. Business owners deal with that fear by procrastinating. They get caught up in endless research and brainstorming to rationalize how long they’ve been putting off executing their vision.
But not to fear. I have a solution for you. An easy-to-remember, three-word solution, in fact…
Launch. It. Ugly.
When I say “ugly,” I mean it.
Stop Googling, stop making lists of ideas, stop spinning your wheels, stop trying to make sure that everything is “perfect.” Identify the simplest possible way that you can get something out the door right now.
Create a product or service you're excited to sell. Pick a charitable giving project you’re passionate about executing. Choose a marketing strategy you think you’d have fun implementing.
Whatever it is, just pick the thing, give yourself the green light, and GO.
Now, I hear you saying…
“But Rachel… I’m not ready. I want this to be perfect and it’s not there yet…”
Here’s an ice-cold bucket of a wake-up call for you: Nothing is ever perfect, and that type of thinking is actually self-sabotage.
Waiting to be perfect, waiting to have it all figured out is holding you back from building your business and realizing your vision.
You cannot grow without trying new things, and you can’t really know if a new thing is working until you put it out in the world and see what happens.
So just launch it ugly, and get it out there.
Chances are, your “bare minimum” is somebody else’s “Oh my god take my money right now.” And even if it isn’t, you can tweak as you go. You can learn and get valuable insights from your mistakes.
That’s what being an entrepreneur is all about, isn’t it? Try, fail, learn, try again, succeed, repeat.
And trust me, this fear of launching is an issue that entrepreneurs at ALL revenue levels share. In fact, I just recently had to work through it in order to launch my new non-profit.
For over a year, I’ve been dreaming about an organization that could support Black mothers in need by providing funding for life-saving and life-changing services like doulas, night nurses, and childcare.
And all this time, I’ve been feeling the same worries and fears you’re feeling right now — I should probably take this slow… I know how to run a business but I don’t know how to run a non-profit.
I’d been holding myself back from this dream of supporting Black mothers because I’d been straight up afraid of doing it wrong.
And so, I decided to acknowledge that fear and push past it.
I decided to launch it anyway.
Because I like a challenge, I decided to “launch it ugly” in just two weeks — the time it took for my conversation with Lewis to go live on his podcast.
I’m committed to providing funds to 10 Black mothers by the end of the year, so they can have access to life-saving and life-changing services before, during, and after childbirth.
My company has made an initial contribution of $50,000 to the Foundation, and we invite you to donate whatever you can.
Together, we can easily double that amount. Together, we can make a powerful impact in the lives of mothers and their children.
And I hope this story inspires you to consider…
What important project have you been putting off?
What dreams have you been saving for “later”?
What visions have you put on pause because you don’t feel like you’re “ready”?
Stop procrastinating. Stop waiting.
The time to launch is right now.
